Dental Treatment in Karachi for Overseas Patients: What to Plan Before You Fly

Medically reviewed byDr. Saad Irfan·

Passport, boarding pass, dental mirror and X-ray laid out for planning dental treatment abroad

Key Takeaways

  • 1Check, clean, whitening, fillings, root canals and crowns fit a short stay. Implants need a plan with a second visit, and braces usually do not fit a trip at all
  • 2Before you book anyone in Pakistan, verify their PMDC registration on pmdc.pk and ask for their degree and university in writing
  • 3Ask for a written plan and written price, then compare it line by line with a written quote from your dentist at home
  • 4Message the clinic on WhatsApp 6 to 8 weeks before you fly, and keep a few spare days in the trip for lab work and healing
  • 5Before you fly home, collect your X-rays, treatment record, invoice and aftercare instructions in writing

If you live in the UK, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia or the US, a trip to Karachi can be a sensible way to get dental work done well and pay less for it. It does not suit every treatment, and it only works if you plan it. Some people call this dental tourism or travel dentistry. Whatever you call it, the guide is for overseas Pakistanis, for foreign visitors, and for expats who live in Karachi. It tells you what to book, what to bring, which treatments fit a short stay and how to judge the cost. I am Dr. Saad Irfan, and I treat patients in English and in Urdu. I trained in Pakistan and at the University of Sheffield in the UK, and patients from abroad, including many overseas Pakistanis, already visit our clinics in DHA and Clifton.

Is it worth travelling to Karachi for dental work?

For many people, yes. Prices in Pakistan are lower in rupee terms, and you can often be seen quickly, including in the evening. But a low price is only a good deal when the work is done well and lasts. A crown that fails in two years costs you more than a careful one that lasts fifteen. So the first question is not "how cheap is it?" It is "who will do the work, with what materials, and what happens if I need a fix after I fly home?"

Treatments that finish in one visit are the easiest, and they are what people mean by same-day dentistry: a check-up, a clean, whitening, most fillings and, in suitable cases, a single crown. Here is how I split all treatments by how well they fit a trip. The visit counts are typical. Your dentist will confirm them after looking at your mouth.

TreatmentTypical visitsFits a short trip? What to know
Check-up, scaling and polish1YesEasy to fit in a day, even at the start or end of a trip
In-clinic teeth whitening1YesShade results vary, and whitening does not change crowns, veneers or fillings
Fillings1YesLarger fillings may need a second visit
Root canal treatment1 to 2YesA crown is usually needed afterwards to protect the tooth
Zirconia crowns and bridges1 to 2YesIn suitable cases a single crown is made by our lab and fitted the same day. Bridges and larger cases need two visits, with a short gap for the lab
Porcelain veneers2 to 3Yes, with spare daysNeeds a design stage, a fitting stage and a gap for the lab
Dental implantsStaged, over monthsPartlyThe implant is placed on one trip, then needs months of healing before the crown. Plan how and where the second stage will happen
BracesMonthly adjustmentsRarelyNot suited to a short trip unless you can have adjustments near home

A simple rule

If the treatment can be finished and checked inside the days you will be in Karachi, it fits a trip. If it needs weeks or months of follow-up, make a plan for that follow-up before you start, not after.

Implants deserve a few extra lines. If you are planning dental implants in Pakistan from abroad, think of the treatment in stages. You have the implant placed on one trip, it heals for several months, and the crown comes after that. Ask us early which plan is realistic for your case and your travel dates, so that the second stage is booked before you leave, not after.

How to check a dentist's qualifications

"Foreign qualified" is a phrase you will see on many clinic websites. On its own it means very little, so I would check three things before you book with anyone, including us.

  1. 1Registration. Every dentist in Pakistan must be registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). You can look up a registration number, name or father's name on the council's own site and see whether the licence is valid and which qualifications are registered.
  2. 2Degrees and universities. Ask for the name of each degree and the university that gave it. A real answer is short and specific.
  3. 3A written plan. After your first assessment you should get the treatment plan and the price in writing, before any work starts.

To check a dentist, use the Search for Doctors Online tool on the PMDC website.

What treatment costs: Karachi compared with home

I cannot quote you a price without seeing your mouth, and I will not guess. What I can show you is the range that dentists charge across Pakistan for the common treatments in 2026. These are market figures from our cost guides. They are not our own prices.

TreatmentMarket range (Rs)Priced
Scaling and polish4,000 to 15,000Per session
Teeth whitening15,000 to 50,000Per course
Root canal treatment15,000 to 60,000Per tooth
Zirconia crown15,000 to 70,000Per crown
Porcelain veneers8,000 to 70,000Per tooth
Dental implant90,000 to 250,000Per implant
Braces90,000 to 350,000Full course
Market price ranges across Pakistan, 2026 (in Pakistani rupees)

Convert those figures at today's exchange rate. Then compare them with what you would pay at home. In England, for example, an NHS patient pays one of three fixed charges: £27.90, £76.60 or £332.10, depending on the band of treatment, from 1 April 2026. That is a fair price for the care the NHS provides, but it covers clinically needed treatment only, and cosmetic work such as whitening and veneers is normally private. In Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia and the US, most dental care is paid for privately or through insurance, and prices differ a lot between practices.

The current NHS dental charges for England are published by the NHS Business Services Authority.

So the honest way to compare is this. Ask your dentist at home for a written quote for the same treatment. Then ask us for a written plan. Put them side by side and look at the material used, the number of visits, whether follow-up is included, and who pays if a crown needs remaking. Add your flights and hotel to the Karachi side. For a single check-up it will rarely be worth the trip. For several crowns, a root canal with a crown, or a full veneer plan, the difference can be large.

Your checklist, step by step

6 to 8 weeks before you fly

  1. 1Message the clinic on WhatsApp and tell us what you need and the dates you can travel. Our number for DHA Phase 5 and Phase 8 is +92 313 3466661, and for Clifton it is +92 334 3930986.
  2. 2Send recent X-rays or clear photos of your teeth if you have them. From these we can usually tell you roughly how many visits you will need and how long to stay, and we confirm it after we examine you.
  3. 3Ask which parts of your treatment can be done in the days you have, and which need a second stage.
  4. 4Book your appointments for early in the trip. Leave spare days for lab work and for any healing you need.
  5. 5Check your own government's travel advice before you book flights.

The UK government publishes current travel advice for Pakistan, and other countries have similar pages.

What to pack

  • Passport or ID
  • Any dental records, X-rays or treatment letters from your dentist at home
  • A list of your medicines and any allergies
  • Your insurance details, if you plan to claim back part of the cost

When you arrive

  1. 1Come for your assessment first. It costs Rs 2,000, and it is where we look, take any X-rays and decide the plan.
  2. 2Ask for the plan and the price in writing, and ask what material will be used for each tooth.
  3. 3Ask what happens if something needs a fix after you have flown home. A good clinic has a straight answer.
  4. 4Payment is flexible, and international cards are accepted. Confirm how you will pay when you book, so there is no surprise at the end.

Before you fly home

  1. 1Collect your X-rays and a written record of the treatment. We give you copies, and your dentist at home will want to see them.
  2. 2Take your invoice, which you need if you claim from insurance.
  3. 3Get aftercare instructions in writing, including what to eat and what to avoid.
  4. 4If you have had surgery, such as a tooth removal or an implant, ask the dentist when it is safe to fly.
  5. 5Keep the clinic's WhatsApp number. Most small questions after you are home can be answered by message.

Safety and hygiene

It is fair to ask how instruments are cleaned, and you should ask any clinic you visit. We use a Class B autoclave for sterilisation, and we have written down the steps so you can read them before you come.

You can also read what patients say. We have 519 Google reviews across our three clinics, with a rating of 5.0, and each profile is linked from our reviews page.

If you are thinking about a trip, send us a message with what you need and your dates, and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth travelling for. If the answer is that your dentist at home can do it just as well, we will say so.
