The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. TMJ disorder refers to pain, clicking, popping, or restricted movement in this joint — often triggered or worsened by bruxism, stress, jaw injury, or a misaligned bite.
An intra-oral splint is built to a specific bite position that reduces strain on the joint and surrounding jaw muscles, rather than simply cushioning against grinding force. The design, thickness, and bite registration are determined by Dr. Saad based on clinical assessment of your specific jaw movement and symptoms.
Retainers After Braces or Invisalign — Why Skipping One Undoes Everything
Removable Clear Retainer
A clear, snugly fitted tray similar in appearance to a clear aligner. Worn full-time for the first few months after braces removal, then nightly. Removable for eating and cleaning. Nearly invisible when worn. Must be worn as prescribed — inconsistent wear allows relapse to begin within weeks.
Fixed (Permanent) Retainer
A thin wire bonded to the back surface of the lower (and sometimes upper) front teeth. Cannot be removed by the patient, so there is no risk of forgetting to wear it. Requires careful flossing with a floss threader or water flosser. Periodic checks confirm the bond has not loosened.
Many patients benefit from both — a fixed retainer on the lower front teeth (the area most prone to relapse) combined with a removable clear retainer worn nightly on the upper arch. This combination is discussed at the end of your orthodontic treatment based on your specific bite and relapse risk.
