Teeth Scaling & Polishing
Most people in Karachi brush their teeth every day and still develop tartar. This is not a failure of hygiene — it is biology. No matter how well you brush, some plaque is always left behind. Within 48 hours, that plaque hardens into calculus — a rock-hard mineral deposit that a toothbrush cannot touch. Calculus builds up along the gum line, underneath the gums, and between teeth. Over months and years, this deposit drives gum inflammation, bad breath, gum recession, and eventual tooth loss. The only way to remove it is with a professional scaling and polishing — a procedure that is not painful, takes 30 to 60 minutes, and at Dr. Saad Irfan Dentistry the cost is confirmed once we have seen how much build-up there is. Scaling and polishing at our clinic is performed using a professional ultrasonic scaler — a device that uses high-frequency vibrations to break up calculus efficiently without excessive pressure on the teeth or gums. Dr. Saad Irfan has performed thousands of scaling procedures across 15 years of clinical practice at his DHA Phase 5, DHA Phase 8, and Clifton Block 9 clinics. Every instrument used is sterilised in a Class B autoclave — hospital-grade sterilisation — before each use. The three clinics hold a 5.0 Google rating from 325 verified reviews, with scaling and polishing among the most frequently mentioned procedures in patient feedback.

What is Teeth Scaling & Polishing?
Dental plaque is a sticky, colourless biofilm made of bacteria, bacterial waste products, and salivary proteins. It forms on tooth surfaces within hours of brushing. The bacteria in plaque feed on sugars from food and produce acids — which cause tooth decay — and toxins — which cause gum inflammation (gingivitis). When plaque is not fully removed, minerals in saliva — primarily calcium phosphate — begin to crystallise within the plaque matrix. Over 48 to 72 hours, this transforms soft plaque into hard dental calculus, also called tartar. Calculus cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Its rough, porous surface acts as a scaffold for more plaque to accumulate on top — accelerating the cycle of decay and gum disease. Only a metal scaler or ultrasonic device can remove it without damaging the tooth.
Is Teeth Scaling & Polishing Right for You?
If you experience any of the following, scaling treatment may be recommended.
Benefits of Teeth Scaling & Polishing
Treatment Procedure
6 stagesPeriodontal assessment — pocket depths measured and recorded using a periodontal probe at 6 points per tooth. Gum inflammation, bleeding on probing, and any X-ray bone changes noted. Establishes baseline and determines whether routine or deep scaling is needed.
Ultrasonic scaling (supragingival) — scaler tip moved systematically along all tooth surfaces above the gum line. Calculus, tartar, and soft deposits broken away from enamel. Water spray flushes debris continuously. Mild vibration sensation — comfortable for most patients.
Subgingival scaling and root planing (if required) — for periodontal pockets of 4mm or more, scaler tip guided below the gum line to remove calculus from the root surface inside the pocket. Local anesthesia via Wand computer-controlled system for pockets of 5mm or more.
Hand scaling with curettes — precision hand instruments with specific blade angles used after ultrasonic phase to remove remaining deposits in tight interproximal spaces, around restorations, and in areas the ultrasonic tip cannot reach directly.
Prophylaxis polishing — rubber prophy cup with fine prophylaxis paste smooths enamel surface. Removes residual staining from tea, coffee, and tobacco. Smooth surface reduces rate of future plaque accumulation. Teeth feel noticeably cleaner immediately.
Fluoride varnish application (if indicated) — for patients with decay history, early enamel erosion, or exposed root surfaces. Fluoride remineralises softened enamel and reduces post-scaling cold sensitivity.

Fluoride varnish application if clinically indicated

No competitor in Karachi publishes a scaling price. We do. Routine scaling quoted after examination. Exact cost confirmed at your first visit after a full periodontal assessment.
Ultrasonic Scaler with Cavitation Effect
Professional ultrasonic scaler at 25,000 to 50,000Hz. The cavitation effect — microscopic water bubbles collapsing against calculus — destroys biofilm in areas the tip itself cannot reach.
Full Periodontal Assessment
Pocket depths measured and recorded at 6 points per tooth. Your gum health graded on every visit. Changes tracked over time — early periodontitis caught before it becomes bone loss.
Class B Autoclave Sterilisation
All instruments sterilised in a Class B autoclave between every patient — the same standard as a hospital operating theatre. Not just wiped down — fully sterilised.

Recovery
Teeth Scaling & Polishing Recovery Timeline
What to expect during your recovery
First 24 to 48 Hours
1-2 daysGums are temporarily tender from instrumentation. Mild soreness manageable with an over-the-counter painkiller. Warm salt water rinses help healing.
Aftercare
Avoid very hard, crunchy, or spicy foods
Rinse with warm salt water 2 to 3 times per day
Avoid tobacco for at least 24 hours — slows gum healing
If fluoride varnish was applied, avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes
First 2 Weeks — Building Better Habits
2 weeksGums begin to firm up and bleed less. Cold sensitivity reduces. This is when improved brushing technique has the most impact.
Aftercare
Brush gently twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush — do not avoid the gum line
Floss daily even if gums bleed — bleeding reduces as gums strengthen
Use sensitivity toothpaste if cold sensitivity is present
Chlorhexidine mouthwash for 2 weeks if recommended by Dr. Saad
Ongoing Maintenance
Every 6 monthsGums should now be firm, pink, and non-bleeding on brushing. Book the next scaling appointment before leaving the clinic.
Aftercare
Book next scaling before you leave — ideally at 6 months
Replace toothbrush every 3 months
Reduce tea, coffee, paan, and tobacco — all accelerate calculus formation
Tell Dr. Saad if gums do not improve within 4 weeks
