Retainer & Night Guard Cost in Pakistan
Medically reviewed byDr. Saad Irfan— MDS, MSc, BDS·
Retainers and night guards are custom appliances made from an impression or digital scan of your teeth. They look similar and are often confused, but they do entirely different jobs: a retainer holds teeth in position after orthodontic treatment, while a night guard protects them from the forces of grinding.
Across Pakistan they run roughly PKR 10,000 to 35,000 depending on type and material. Retainers sit at the lower end, hard acrylic night guards and TMJ splints at the upper.
If you have finished orthodontic treatment, the important thing to understand is that retention is not optional and it is not temporary. Teeth have a lifelong tendency to drift back toward their original position. Retainers are what stops that, and stopping wearing them is how people lose an expensive orthodontic result.
Retainers & Night Guards Prices Across Pakistan — 2026
Different appliances for different problems. Material thickness and hardness drive the cost within each category.
| Type | Market range (PKR) |
|---|---|
Clear vacuum-formed retainer The standard removable retainer after braces or aligners. Nearly invisible. Typically worn nightly indefinitely. | 10,000 – 18,000 |
Fixed bonded retainer A thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Permanent, nothing to remember, but needs careful flossing and occasional repair. | 15,000 – 25,000 |
Hard night guard / TMJ splint Thicker hard acrylic for bruxism or jaw joint problems. Requires bite registration and adjustment appointments, which is where the extra cost sits. | 18,000 – 35,000 |
Overall market range: PKR 10,000 – 35,000 per appliance. These are prices observed across dental practices in Pakistan, published so you can set a realistic budget and judge whether a quote you have been given is reasonable. They are not Dr Saad Dentistry’s prices — see how our pricing works.
What Makes the Price Go Up or Down
Appliance type
A thin vacuum-formed retainer and a hard acrylic TMJ splint are very different pieces of laboratory work.
Material thickness and hardness
Heavy grinders need thicker, harder material that will not be chewed through within months.
One arch or both
Retainers are often needed on both upper and lower. Night guards are usually a single arch.
Whether bite registration is needed
TMJ splints must be built to a specific bite relationship, which requires additional records and adjustment visits.
Digital scan or conventional impression
Digital scanning is more comfortable and generally more accurate, and some practices price it slightly higher.
What Should Be Included in the Price
Use this as a checklist when comparing quotes. A figure that excludes half of the list below is not cheaper — it is incomplete.
- Digital scan or conventional impression
- Custom laboratory fabrication
- Fitting appointment and adjustment
- Instructions on wear and cleaning
- A follow-up adjustment where needed
Additional Costs to Budget For
These sit outside the headline figure and are the usual reason a final bill exceeds expectations. Not all of them will apply to you.
Replacement if lost
Charged again. Replace promptly — teeth begin drifting within days, and a retainer that no longer fits is a new orthodontic problem.
Repair of a fixed retainer
Bonded wires occasionally debond at one tooth and need re-bonding.
Second arch
Where both upper and lower retention is needed.
Periodic replacement
Removable retainers wear out. Most people need a new one every few years.
How Prices Compare Across Pakistani Cities
| Karachi | Widest availability, including digital scanning and same-week turnaround. |
| Lahore | Comparable pricing and laboratory access. |
| Islamabad | Slightly higher on average. |
| Smaller cities | Cheaper, though usually conventional impressions rather than digital scanning. |
Why the Cheapest Option Often Costs More
A retainer is the cheapest appliance in orthodontics and the one that determines whether everything you spent on braces was worth it.
Thin or poorly fitting retainers made from inadequate material distort, crack and stop holding. The teeth drift, usually so gradually that nobody notices until the front teeth have visibly rotated again — at which point the options are a fresh course of orthodontics or accepting the relapse.
Night guards have a related problem. A soft guard is more comfortable and cheaper, but for a genuine bruxist it can make things worse: soft material invites chewing, which increases muscle activity rather than reducing it. Heavy grinders generally need hard acrylic, properly adjusted to the bite.
The most expensive mistake in this category is not buying a cheap retainer. It is not replacing a lost one for six months.
Payment Plans and Instalments
These are single-appliance costs, normally paid in full at the fitting appointment. Retainers are sometimes bundled into an orthodontic package — worth confirming before treatment starts rather than after.
How We Quote at Dr Saad Dentistry
Everything above is the Pakistani market. For your own case we quote after an examination rather than before it, because the figures on this page move substantially depending on findings we cannot assess without looking — bone condition, canal anatomy, how much sound tooth structure is actually left.
A consultation is PKR 2,000, the same at all three clinics. It covers a full examination, the diagnostic X-rays needed on the day, and a written treatment plan with every item priced separately. You are under no obligation to proceed with any of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a retainer cost in Pakistan?
A clear removable retainer generally runs PKR 10,000 to 18,000 and a fixed bonded retainer PKR 15,000 to 25,000. Hard night guards and TMJ splints run PKR 18,000 to 35,000.
How long do I need to wear a retainer?
Indefinitely, in practice. Full-time for the first few months after braces, then nightly. Teeth retain a lifelong tendency to drift back toward their original position.
What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?
Teeth relapse — gradually at first, then visibly. Most orthodontic relapse cases are patients who stopped wearing retention after a year or two.
Are retainers included in the price of braces?
Usually not. Ask before starting orthodontic treatment, not at the end, and budget for them as part of the total cost.
Fixed or removable retainer?
Fixed retainers cannot be forgotten but need careful flossing and occasionally debond. Removable ones are easier to clean but depend entirely on you wearing them. Many patients have both.
What is the difference between a retainer and a night guard?
A retainer holds teeth in position after orthodontics. A night guard protects teeth from grinding forces. They look similar but serve entirely different purposes and are built differently.
Do I need a night guard if I grind my teeth?
If grinding is causing wear, fractures, jaw pain or headaches, then yes. Bruxism can flatten teeth over years and is a common cause of cracked cusps and failed restorations.
Are soft night guards as good as hard ones?
For light grinders, often yes. For heavy grinders, hard acrylic is usually better — soft material can encourage chewing and increase muscle activity rather than reducing it.
How much do clear aligners cost in Pakistan?
Considerably more than retainers, since aligners actively move teeth rather than holding them. Expect PKR 200,000 upward for a full course, with branded systems higher.
How long does a retainer last?
A few years with careful use. They warp with heat, crack, and eventually stop fitting properly. Replace them when the fit changes rather than waiting until they break.
How do I clean my retainer?
Cool water and a soft brush, or a retainer cleaning tablet. Never hot water — it will distort the plastic permanently.
I lost my retainer — how urgently do I need a new one?
Within days rather than weeks. Teeth begin moving almost immediately, and a replacement made after months of drift will no longer fit the position you paid to achieve.
